Five of us met at 8:30 at the Underhill Center commuter lot and took two cars to the Stevensville trailhead. It was overcast and quite cool, in the 50s F, as we started up Butler Lodge Trail around 8:45. The trail was wet in spots due to the rains the day before, but the stretch of dry weather before that kept it from being too muddy. We reached Butler Lodge around 10:05, where we hung out for a bit admiring the view toward the Adirondacks and talking to an LT hiker who’d spent the night there. It was cold and windy as we started up Wampahoofus, but we started to get some brief patches of sun. Wet rocks made the going tricky in spots, but we made it to the Forehead around 11:15. There, the last holdouts added layers (I later heard that the windchill at the top was in the 30s F). After some pictures (including my rather inept attempt at a group selfie) we headed down Maple Ridge. Again, wet rocks made some spots tricky, but we negotiated the step-across and steep rock sections with a little help from each other. At the rock face everyone but me opted for the bypass, and just before the Frost junction we paused around 12:40 to look at the huge cantilevered rock corner that most people walk over without ever realizing it’s there. We continued down Frost trail with one first aid incident (a bandage for a tiny finger cut that wouldn’t stop bleeding). Near the bottom one of us spotted what looked like a piece of plastic, but on closer examination proved to be a sheet of lichen off a nearby rock. We got to the cars around 1:55. A fun, but cold hike for early September. Participants: Mira Geffner, Andrew Magnuson, Ben Gordesky, Guy Dickson, David Hathaway (leader).
