The second Battell Shelter was built in 1967, replacing an earlier shelter that had stood on Mount Abraham. The materials were airlifted to the site by helicopter, and the construction was done for the U.S. Forest Service by campers from Farm and Wilderness Camps of Plymouth Union, Vermont. Specifically, work parties from Tamarack Farm, one of the camp units of Farm and Wilderness Camps, began the assembly of the shelter in July, with this work done under the supervision of camp counselors as a service project.
The shelter has bunk space for 6 to 8. Water is permanent at a spring 100 ft. to the east. Like other GMC shelters on the Long Trail, Battell Shelter was staffed with seasonal caretakers who managed the site and educated hikers about wilderness practices. The shelter became a high-use facility due to its location on the popular ridge between Lincoln Gap and Mount Abraham, and GMC volunteers have maintained it through decades of service.
In 2025, ten loads of materials were airlifted by helicopter to build a full second shelter at this high-use site, reflecting both the shelter’s continued importance and the practical challenges of maintaining facilities in remote alpine terrain.
