Battell Shelter Overnight Site Expansion

Built in 1967, the current Battell Shelter is a wood-rame lean-to that sleeps only eight. Due to high usage of the site and limited available space for tent camping, the Green Mountain Club moved to expand overnight capacity. To increase capacity and improve the hiker experience while protecting vulnerable high-elevation vegetation from impacts of overuse, and because of the current shelter’s historical and architectural significance, a new shelter was built adjacent to the original rather than replacing it.

This annex, constructed as a lean-to structure, addresses the shortage of nearby tenting areas that hikers would otherwise use to accommodate overflow from the original shelter. The expansion preserves the 1967 shelter as a historic structure while accommodating the growing numbers of visitors to this popular and accessible overnight site on the Long Trail.
