Brookside Cottage was a private residence offering board and lodging to Long Trail hikers in 1921. Located near Cuttingsville, Vermont — an unincorporated village in Shrewsbury in Rutland County — it appeared on O’Kane’s Long Trail map just north of the North Shrewsbury to North Clarendon Road. The property was run by Marjorie Murray, who advertised post office and telephone access. In its early years, Brookside Cottage exemplified the informal network of privately owned homes, farms, and lodging houses that served hikers before the Green Mountain Club established its formal system of maintained shelters. By 1932, the property had been abandoned, likely reflecting the broader shift toward official trail accommodations and the economic pressures of the Great Depression.
