Buffum Camp was a rustic lean-to shelter built by the Green Mountain Club in 1921.
The shelter accommodated 20 to 24 persons with bunks, though later accounts indicate it was built with capacity for 12 bunks and included a stove, with a brook located approximately 30 yards to the west. The shelter was situated on the Long Trail just north of Route 140, accessed via an old public road that climbed about three-quarters of a mile uphill from the highway.
Buffum Camp remained in use through the mid-twentieth century. An inspection conducted in the fall found the shelter to be in neat condition, indicating it was actively maintained. The shelter was eventually removed sometime after 1960, making it no longer extant. The site is believed to have historical connections to mountaintop logging operations in the area, as suggested by references in the UVM Long Trail digital archives linking it to a lumber camp approximately two miles below Camp #4.
