Carmel Camp was a Green Mountain Club–built shelter constructed in 1949 on the Long Trail in Vermont. The small steel structure accommodated a maximum of four hikers and was owned and maintained by residents of Proctor. The shelter saw regular use throughout the 1950s and 1960s, though access was restricted during deer hunting season when owners reserved it for their exclusive use.
The shelter could be subject to wildlife encounters, as one hiker’s 1963 overnight stay demonstrated when porcupines occupied the roof—a problem solved only by unconventional means. Despite its modest size and remote location, Carmel Camp 3rd served the hiking community for nearly three decades until it was decommissioned in 1976, when it was replaced by the David Logan Shelter.
