Chatfields Boarding House operated as a private residence rather than a Green Mountain Club-built facility. The shelter served hikers on Vermont’s Long Trail during the early establishment of the trail system.
Though initially operational, the facility fell into disrepair. The location still proved popular as it was located along the Chatfield Trail, an approach trail from South Lincoln and autos could usually get to within a mile of the old boarding house.
As late as 1924, it was described as "offering some shelter"
