Griffith Lake Tenting Area

Griffith Lake Tenting Area is a GMC-built facility established in 1996 and remains in use today. A fee is charged for overnight use at these sites. The tenting area represents the Green Mountain Club’s shift toward managing dispersed camping through designated platforms rather than traditional enclosed shelters.

The site was slated for improvements in 1998, including shifting the entire campsite to the east side of the AT/LT with restoration of the lake shore tentsites.

In 1998, volunteers helped build new tent platforms at Griffith Lake in September. These infrastructure improvements were part of broader backcountry management effort — in 2001, a new composting toilet was designed and built for the Griffith Lake Tenting Area.

The facility benefits from active stewardship. A GMC caretaker is usually in residence to assist hikers and maintain the region’s campsites and trails.

Camping at Griffith Lake is restricted to the tent platforms to protect this fragile shoreline and preserve its natural beauty.

Griffith Lake Tenting Area appears regularly in GMC trail adoption lists from 2000 onward, indicating its ongoing inclusion in volunteer maintenance programs.
