Lake Pleiad Camp

A lodge at Lake Pleiad was first built in 1919 with bunks for 12 by the Lake Pleiad Section of the GMC, but it was destroyed by fire. The Lake Pleiad Section rebuilt the lodge following its destruction, finishing the work by late 1923. The rebuilt structure was a frame shelter maintained by the Bread Loaf Section with bunks for 12, and it was described in O’Kane’s 1926 guidebook as "a Lodge built of boards and provided with a double tier of bunks at each end."

Water was found in a small brook near the Lake Pleiad spur junction, though in dry seasons boiled lake water was necessary.

The register at Lake Pleiad had 625 names in 1928, indicating the shelter’s popularity during that era. The shelter was reported in poor condition and out of use by February 1957.

In September 1967, Troop 45 Granville, N.Y., with 6 adults undertook major repairs to the shelter, arriving Friday evening and working through Saturday. The scouts removed the old floor and outside sheathing, raised and leveled the front on three new stone piers, removed the rotten rear sill and built three new piers in the back, installed side piers to keep the floor at least 6 inches above ground, creosoted all undersides of wood, installed new flooring of 5/4 spruce tongue and groove planking, repaired and reinforced the bunks, reduced roof sag with a new center post, boarded up the rear window, and sheathed walls with spruce shiplap.

Despite the 1967 repairs, the shelter’s future remained troubled. Lake Pleiad Camp was one of the oldest Long Trail shelters, built in 1923 by the Lake Pleiad Section (by then known as the Bread Loaf Section). The shelter had become a popular party spot and was plagued with major vandalism and trash problems over the years, which led the Trails and Shelter Committee to decide on its removal. In the spring of 1994, the Bread Loaf Section removed the shelter, with particularly strong efforts from section president Guy Wallis.
