Long Hole Camp was an abandoned lumber camp that provided some shelter along the Long Trail near Roaring Branch.
Located at the south end of Long Hole, a long, marshy deadwater on Roaring Brook north of Griffith Lake, the camp occupied an elevation of 2,530 feet in what was once the heart of a logging operation.
An old lumber camp at Long Hole provided some shelter for hikers traversing the central Vermont wilderness between Griffith Lake and Danby. The Trail follows the main stream up by a road that would be passable for autos if the bridges were not down, passing a ruined lumber camp near lower end of Long Hole, crosses stream and passes another old camp at upper end of Long Hole, suggesting the site contained multiple camp structures from its operating years.
The facility was listed as an abandoned lumber camp with some shelter in the 2nd edition of the Long Trail Guide Book in 1920, but no shelter was mentioned in the 9th edition in 1932. This shift in documentation indicates the camp’s utility as a hiking shelter declined over the early 20th century. Despite its abandonment and loss of formal recognition, Long Hole Camp remained part of the Long Trail landscape, a tangible remnant of Vermont’s logging heritage that once served the dual purpose of industrial lodging and later, backcountry shelter for hikers.
