Octagon

The Octagon was constructed on December 9, 1940, alongside the opening of the single chair lift up Mount Mansfield as a warming hut. It was located near the upper station of the Mt. Mansfield Chair Lifts, with a spur trail leading to it from the Toll Road. Designed as a support facility for the ski area rather than a traditional hiking shelter, the Octagon featured a cafeteria where hikers could purchase lunch.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, it served as the residence of the Summit Rangers during the summer months. The building also housed a ranger-naturalist who managed crowds of people visiting the mountain in the summer season.

The Octagon was situated near the Stone Hut ski shelter, another structure built by the CCC in the 1930s that was used by summit rangers in the summer months. Unlike many Long Trail shelters that were constructed or maintained by the Green Mountain Club, the Octagon was not built by the GMC. Rather, it was developed as part of the commercial ski infrastructure on Mount Mansfield.

Throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, the Octagon remained an active facility, providing both services to mountain visitors and housing for seasonal staff managing the alpine environment. The shelter still stands today.
