Parker Camp 1st

Parker Camp 1st served the Long Trail near Johnson, Vermont, at an elevation of 1,800 feet in what is now Division 11 of the trail system. The camp was mentioned in the Green Mountain Club’s Long Trail Guide Book sixth edition in 1924, indicating it was established by or before that date. By the seventh edition of the guide book in 1928, E. P. Dickinson noted that the camp was in poor condition. The facility appears to have been an old lumber camp structure adapted for hiker use, typical of early Long Trail shelter development.

The deteriorating state of the original structure led to its replacement. In the 1930 guide book, Parker Camp was listed as “rebuilt”, indicating that by that year a new Parker Camp 2nd had been constructed at the same location. The Long Trail System Shelter History notes that Parker Camp 1st was mentioned in the sixth edition guidebook of 1924, and that Dickinson indicated the camp was in poor condition in the 1928 edition, with Parker Camp (2nd) eventually replacing it. The original structure did not survive and is no longer standing.
