Pico Camp 2nd was completed on August 12, 1959, replacing an earlier log shelter built on the site in 1924. The new camp is a 12 x 14 foot frame cabin with bunks for 8 to 12, built by the Long Trail Patrol. Much appreciation was extended to the Massachusetts D.A.R. for funds toward the construction.
The cabin occupies a clearing on the east slope of Pico Peak, with Killington Peak directly to the south and Ascutney to the southeast, and a small spring located 100 feet to the north on the Long Trail. The stove was removed in 1977.
Since its opening, the shelter has seen consistent use by Long Trail hikers.
A logbook covering September 1998 through June 1999 documented 261 register entries, with hikers from as far as Argentina, Germany, and the Netherlands. The shelter required repairs to its window panes in the 1990s and early 2000s, with Lexan replacements installed to prevent water damage and porcupine gnawing.
By the 2000s, the building showed signs of aging, with rotted framing around the large east windows and damage requiring periodic patching.
The cabin has remained in use from 1959 to present, serving as one of the most heavily trafficked shelters on the Long Trail’s Killington Section segment.
