Seth Warner Camp 2nd was a frame shelter with bunks for eight, built by the Long Trail Patrol for the Bennington Section in 1938 in an overgrown clearing. The cost of construction was $150. After many years of use, the camp received maintenance and repairs in the mid-1950s, including a new roof, new boards, and reinforced bunks.
By 1959, the Long Trail Patrol undertook more substantial improvements to the aging structure. Seth Warner Camp received complete new siding, a new stove, new shutters and window screening, and inside repairs. Despite these efforts to extend its life, the shelter continued to deteriorate under heavy use. The camp served hikers throughout the early 1960s—in June 1964, a near-disaster occurred when two young boys built a fire in the camp stove that nearly set the cabin ablaze, though they and another camper quickly extinguished it with water.
By 1965, the deteriorated structure was deemed beyond practical repair and was replaced by Seth Warner Shelter, built by carpenter trainees from the Manpower Development Training Act. Thus, Seth Warner Camp 2nd stood from 1938 until its demolition in 1965, serving as one of the original shelters on the southern section of the Long Trail.
