Stony Brook Shelter 1st

Stony Brook Shelter was a log lean-to constructed by the Norwich University Outing Club in 1958, designed to accommodate six people.

The shelter was maintained by the Ottauquechee Section of the GMC, with water provided by Mink Brook flowing in front of the structure. The shelter occupied a location near Notown Clearing, close to where the Appalachian Trail crossed Stony Brook Road on the eastern side of the Green Mountains.

For decades the shelter served hikers traversing the Appalachian Trail between Sherburne Pass and the villages to the east. In November 1964, it was the starting point for a trip westward along the Appalachian Trail, and in June 1973, hikers could still depart from the shelter on outings into the surrounding terrain.

In August 1973, a floor was installed at the shelter by volunteers from the Worcester Section, and a table and shelves were also added.

In 1988, the shelter was available for adoption in the GMC’s adopt-a-shelter program.

The shelter’s tenure ended due to its proximity to a road. The shelter was removed in 1998 because it was too close to a road passable by cars.

In July 1997, shelter builders Erik and Laurel Tobiason completed a replacement shelter located about 0.8 miles south on the Appalachian Trail, in a more remote setting.

The old shelter, built by the Norwich University Outing Club in 1958, was planned for removal later that year due to its proximity to a road passable by cars. The original Stony Brook Shelter 1st thus gave way to preserve the backcountry experience for future hikers, with its replacement standing deeper in the forest away from vehicular access.
