Story Spring Shelter

Story Spring Shelter is a US Forest Service frame lean-to built in 1963, located in Division II of the Long Trail in southern Vermont at approximately 2,810 feet elevation. The shelter was named for longtime trail worker George F. Story, who
for many years was an active trail worker in the Worcester Section.

The frame shelter has bunk space for 6 to 8, and there is a spring beside the Trail 150 ft. north of the shelter. The shelter sits on the Long Trail between Caughnawaga Shelter to the south and the Arlington-West Wardsboro Road to the north, in a section of trail maintained by the Connecticut Section of the GMC.

Over its more than six decades of operation, Story Spring Shelter has served as a base for regular volunteer maintenance work. The shelter has an outhouse with a distinctive design: it was constructed with a double-wide base, with one side covered by the house itself and the other by a plastic cover, allowing the privy to be shifted periodically for composting purposes.

The shelter remains standing and continues to serve Long Trail hikers. Maintenance activities at the shelter and its surrounding trail section have been ongoing fixtures of Connecticut Section operations, with work weekends regularly scheduled throughout the year to clear blowdowns, maintain water bars, refresh blazes, and make repairs to the structure itself.
