Sunrise Camp

Sunrise Camp was a steel shelter built by the Green Mountain Club in 1925 near the old Goshen Lodge site, at an elevation of 2,820 feet along Division VI of the Long Trail. It was funded with a gift from Redfield Proctor through the Proctor Section, reflecting the philanthropic support that enabled much of the GMC’s early shelter construction.

The camp had bunks for 8 to 10 persons and water was available at an adjacent brook.
By the 1940 guide edition, it accommodated 20 persons with a stove, though capacity varied as the structure aged. In trail guides from the late 1930s and 1940s, the facility was regularly listed as one of the principal stopping points along this section of the Long Trail, situated roughly five to six miles north of Carmel Camp and approximately one mile south of the Brandon-Rochester Highway at Goshen Pass.

The camp remained in use from 1925 to 1966, when it still provided shelter but was no longer actively maintained. By the early 1960s, Paul Woodward recorded that the structure was in deteriorated condition. A 1960 Long Trail News report noted the camp had been repaired and had bunks for 10, indicating brief efforts at restoration, but the facility continued to decline.

A newer shelter, Sunrise Shelter, was built by the Long Trail Patrol in 1964 as a gift from Mortimer R. Proctor, replacing the aging 1925 camp. This succession of structures reflected the ongoing challenge the GMC faced in maintaining shelters and the generosity of the Proctor family, who contributed significantly to the Long Trail system over multiple decades.
