Sunrise Shelter 2nd

The second Sunrise Shelter was relocated approximately 1.5 miles south of its previous site, which had stood since 1964 and had fallen into disrepair. In preparation for the 2023 relocation, materials were airdropped at the shelter in 2022.

Site preparation, the foundation, piers, floor system, and privy were completed in 2022, while the GMC Special Projects Crew and volunteer Chip Swanson built the shelter itself in five working weeks in 2023.

The new shelter is a timber-framed structure with twelve bunks and four walls, constructed with help from volunteer Chip Swanson, a retired timber framer.

In consultation with the Green Mountain National Forest, GMC decided to site the shelter farther from the road, conforming to current management standards.

A volunteer group decommissioned the old site in early August 2023.
