This is a 13′ x 14′ cedar log cabin with double-decker bunks, inside table, and a wood stove. It is believed to be the first cedar log cabin in the system. Mark Brown crafted the plans and shared his expertise in its construction. GMC’er Mike Russom will oversee the construction. Russ Eastwood was the efficient low cost purchasing agent for materials. Al Stiles of the Breadloaf Section organized the work effort The old foundation was dug out, the site leveled and six holes for piers dug to bedrock. Holes were drilled into the bed rock for steel pins and then the piers were poured. Construction workers were Ray Auger, Jory Diehlman; Mike Russom, Doug Thompson, Bob Reardon, Andy Sterns, Andrew Scudder, Ted Hobart, Russ Eastwood, Becky Eastwood, Doug Stiffler, Ben Eastwood, Geoff Hayter, and Dave Mcevoy. This is an enclosed shelter with bunk space for 14 and was built by the GMC and USFS in 1987. It sits on a steep hillside overlooking shallow Skylight Pond. The pond is not suitable for fishing or swimming. Water is available from a spring 250 ft north or from the pond in dry seasons. The area around the pond is very sensitive to resource damage. A caretaker is in seasonal residence to educate hikers and help them minimize their impact. A fee is charged for overnight use. There is no tenting allowed in the vicinity of the pond, but there is an established tenting area just south on the LT on Battell Mt. A no-wood fire zone extends 500 ft from the pond to permit the surrounding forest to recover from years of indiscriminate cutting of vegetation by campers. [GB 24th Edition 1996]
