9/24 – Belvidere

Five hikers on a beautiful and windy day hiked to Belvidere fire tower on the LT north. Participants: Andrew, Jordan, Lori, Helena, and Nancy McClellan (substitute leader).

9/17 – Garfield
Our group of three hikers met at the Richmond Park and Ride at 5:00 AM for a 7:00 AM start in NH. We set out to pick up another in Montpelier before making our way to the Garfield Trailhead in Bethlehem, NH where we met up with two others (shortly after a bear darted out in front of our car on the drive over!) Temperatures were in the high 30’s for our start, but multiple clothing changes ensued as the morning progressed and temperatures warmed to the 50’s. The hike up Garfield was fairly moderate and wooded for the majority of the outing. But the last quarter mile turns into a rocky scramble before opening to a rocky plateau that afforded superb views of Mts Lafayette, Owl’s Head and the whole of the Pemi Wilderness. Mt. Washington was visible in the distance as were many other 4000 footers. Everyone in the group was well prepared for this outing and we took our time at the summit to enjoy the views before descending the five miles back to the trailhead. On our departure we pulled up alongside a gaggle of about twenty turkeys who paid us no attention. Participants: Ephraim Maciejowski, Diane Sherman, Jill George, Liana Edwards, Erin Moore and Chris Luczynski (leader).

9/10 – Franconia Ridge
Three early risers met at the Richmond Park and Ride at 4:00 AM for the two hour drive to Falling Waters Trailhead where we met up with two others in NH. Shortly after our 6:00 AM start the two hikers we met up with decided that they were going to split away from the main group to proceed on their own. With our smaller group (all of us own to each other) we picked up the pace and completed the loop in under 6 hours with multiple view breaks along the way. Peaks summited along the way included Little Haystack (4760’), Mount Lincoln (5089’) and Mount Lafayette (5249’). About 9 miles with 4100 feet of vertical gain. The day was very clear with an undercast to the west and clear skies to the east over the Pemi Wilderness. While the outing started in the dark with cool temperatures and early sustained wind above the tree line, temperatures increased significantly as the day progressed. By our finish just before noon temperatures had risen to the mid 80’s. Franconia Ridge offers stunning, open views on a clear day and today did not disappoint. Participants: Julie Cimonetti, Liana Edwards and Chris Luczynski (leader).

We met at the Stevensville trailhead at 10 and spent a while talking to Phil Hazen and Joanna Cummings who were staffing the GMC Long Trail Day table there, then started up Butler Lodge trail. It was pleasant and sunny. The advertised destination for the hike was Butler Lodge, but when we got there someone asked if we could continue up Wampahoofus. Everyone wanted to, so we continued up, reaching the Forehead around 1:30. At the Maple Ridge junction two people wanted to go a little faster and opted to leave the group. They reached the Forehead ahead of us, and passed us as we were headed up and hey were headed down. The rest of us got to the Forehead around 1:40 and back to the trailhead around 3:45. Participants: Kate Eberle, Helena Nicolay, Andria Ronne, Xavier, David Hathaway (leader).

9/4 – Cantilever Rock
Four of us met at the Underhill Center commuter lot at 9 AM and took one car up to the Underhill State Park, and hit the trail about 9:15. We reached the Sunset Ridge trailhead around 9:45 and got to Cantilever Rock around 11. No views due to the clouds. Two of us wandered up along the base of the cliff to the right to see if we could find a way up, but the rock was wet, so it wasn’t a good day for it. We encountered three separate groups who had taken the Cantilever Rock spur trail while trying to reach the Mansfield summit. So after the hike I got approval from Vermont FPR and put up a sign at the junction. We got back to the car around 12:15. Participants: Jordan Mitchell, Helena Nicolay, Jas Smith, David Hathaway (leader).
